The Discoverers’ Journey is a valuable tool we use to concretize months’ worth of in-class learning. During spring break 2016 we took a group of youth to Washington, D.C. and we got to meet with local elders and business owners; we also got to see historic sites and institutions. Our jam-packed itinerary included Ben’s Chili Bowl, Sankofa video, Books,& Café, Howard University, The MLK Memorial, The African American Civil War Museum, and more.
Our second annual Horizon Expansion Fundraiser, The Gift of the Griot, was held at the Gary Comer Youth Center on Chicago’s south side.
In September 2012 an interview with our Executive Director was aired on Generation Next, a show hosted by Ricardo De La Cruz II on WXRJ Radio, 94.9, a Bloomington/Normal station. This show has a predominately teen audience and a teen host. In the interview, our Executive Director was able to describe our services and explain why cultural studies is so important to a youth population that is frequently inundated with pop culture, but rarely their own.
